You can't have failed to notice that last weekend saw the kick off of the new football season. You can't really escape from it, even in this blog I'll be talking about it. Ostensibly.

Football is notable for the meteoric success and dramatic failure of its managers – all of which stages may happen in a single season. These days it’s not just football managers’ heads who roll inside a year, however. Just as great clubs expect great things, so do large companies. Those who took on the management of the Great Western franchise, for example, could expect a high profile and a high profile exit for not achieving all the goals set. At one point the franchise had had seven managers in eight years – which is practically Newcastle United territory.

Happily First Great Western has achieved a 92% punctuality rate according to recent figures, restoring it to the Premiership and a hopefully stable period.

Just as football has its dominating clubs, so does our profession. DHL springs to mind as the Man U of our world – an organisation on a scale that puts many other companies in a different league...........more
