It will probably be snowing, hailing, stormy and raining a plague of locusts when you click on this blog today, but right now it’s feeling like spring is in the air. The birds are positively bellowing in the morning and hurling themselves in front of my car battling over territory.

In short, the sap is rising.

What better time to tell you about the launch of our new Cycling Forum? If I’d mentioned it a couple of weeks ago you would have told me to get on my aforementioned bike. But our Launch Event is suddenly looking a lot more attractive.

It will be held on Wednesday 17th March at the Department for Transport’s headquarters. CILT members are invited to attend this inaugural meeting.

Cycling is undergoing a renaissance in many towns and cities in the UK, leading the charge is Cycling Towns and Cities which has received special funding from Cycling England to act as a demonstration of what can be achieved, and London, where cycling levels have boomed in recent years.

Now the nearest I have come to two wheels over the last few cold and snowy months is a spectacular encounter with Our Sam’s Cosmic Racer scooter – he was clinging to the handlebars like the Red Baron, doing about 190mph through our hall, at the time. The resulting collision set off its built-in light display, almost as colourful as the sentence I nearly said on extricating myself from the aftermath of the collision.

So I’ve established myself as a fair weather - exploring an old railway track bed cycle path - sort of a cyclist. But cycling really can make a positive contribution to travel plans and reducing congestion, year round. To explain all Phillip Darnton from Cycling England will explain the quantitative results of Cycling England's first three years' investment in Cycling Demonstration Towns. And Ben Plowden from Transport for London will explain how the London Cycling Revolution has been achieved and plans for the future.........more
